Alabama made national headlines, not in a good way, in 2015 when multiple driver’s license office locations were closed, leaving quite a few Alabama counties without a single driver license office. The driver license office closures disproportionally affected rural counties and African-Americans. There is currently a bill in the Alabama Senate seeking to change that. Senate Bill 109 would require the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) to operate at least one driver license office in each of Alabama’s counties. However, the bill has not yet passed the Senate, and its prospects for success are unclear.
