Traffic Attorney in Athens
More Than 18 Years Defending North Alabama Drivers
A traffic citation can involve more than paying a fine. The charge, the court listed on the ticket, and your driving record can affect your options. Ward Law handles traffic violations for residents, commuters, and out-of-town motorists cited in Athens or Limestone County.
Attorney Frank Ward has more than 18 years of experience representing clients throughout North Alabama and frequently handles cases in Athens Municipal Court. We can review your citation, explain the applicable court process, and discuss how the charge may affect your driving privileges or record.

Where Athens Traffic Citations Are Handled
The court named on your citation determines where the charge must be resolved. Citations issued by Athens police for violations within city limits are generally handled in Athens Municipal Court. Tickets issued outside the city limits by Alabama State Troopers or Limestone County Sheriff’s deputies are generally directed to Limestone County District Court.
Check the citation for the court name, court date, charge, and instructions. You must appear in court unless the ticket is resolved before that date through an available payment or disposition option. The cited offense, your driving record, and the listed court’s requirements determine whether such an option is available.
Traffic Offenses We Handle
We represent drivers facing routine infractions and more serious charges. Tailgating and failing to stop at a red light are examples of non-criminal traffic infractions. An offense classified as criminal can carry imprisonment and create a permanent record, so it’s important to understand the charge before responding.
We handle matters involving:
- Speeding
- Reckless driving
- Driving with a suspended license
- Driving under the influence
- Fleeing the scene of an accident
- Attempting to elude law enforcement
- Vehicular homicide
Each offense carries its own potential penalties and court requirements. Our traffic ticket attorney can examine the specific charge and explain what it may mean for you.
Alabama Driver License Points & Suspension Periods
Paying a ticket resolves the cited charge, but it may also add points to your driving record. Under the Alabama driver license point system, accumulating 12 to 14 points within two years results in a 60-day suspension. Accumulating 24 or more points during that period results in a 365-day suspension.
Point values for several common violations include:
- 2 points: Speeding 1 to 25 mph over the limit.
- 5 points: Speeding 26 mph or more over the limit or failing to yield.
- 6 points: Reckless driving or reckless endangerment.
- 3 points: Disregarding a traffic control device.
Limestone County doesn’t permit payment without a court appearance for certain charges:
- Reckless driving
- Driving under the influence
- Driving while suspended or revoked
- Passing a stopped school bus
- Move-over violations
- Speeding in a school zone
- Specified interstate or left-lane violations
